Look for three separate facts

A useful rate display tells you who published the figure, the date it applies to and when the website last checked it. Those dates are different. A page can be checked today while the newest official publication still relates to an earlier business day.

LagosXchange shows the CBN date with each official figure and the last successful check in West Africa Time. When a source cannot be reached or its data fails validation, the site displays the last good figures with a warning. A warning should not be hidden just because the page still has a number.

Check what the figure measures

Read the currency direction and whether the figure is buying, central, selling, closing or a reference rate. Do not compare a naira-per-dollar figure directly with a dollar-per-naira figure. A visitor's own estimate should not be presented as a sourced market publication.

Open the original publisher's page where possible. Confirm the currency and date rather than relying on an unattributed screenshot. If a page says real time but its data source updates daily, the label gives the wrong impression.

Know the limits of a cross-check

Two sources can differ because they use different measures, collection methods or publication times. That does not automatically prove one is wrong. It is a reason to examine the methodology. For the actual transaction, ask the provider for the rate and charges that apply to your own amount and payment route.
